Early detection and prevention

Leakage – leaks are the main problem in old buildings. Although leaks can also be found in new buildings due to improper installation of piping or poor sealing. Vigilance is required from us in order to prevent damages and reduce costs. If there is a malfunction and/or incorrect installation of the water piping, this can lead to moisture in the walls, ceiling and even cause an explosion in the water piping while causing much more significant damage – so early detection will reduce the damage.

  • Swelling, dampness, and mold – these are visible signs on the walls and ceiling. These marks can be over the entire surface and can start in the area above the panels. Other signs can be a change in the gun color between the pavers and/or tiles, white foam coming out between the tiles, etc. As mentioned, the first signs are the swelling, the peeling of the plaster, and then dampness and mold. The problem intensifies when the wall and/or floor is hidden by furniture (kitchen, inside the kitchen cabinets, shower), wardrobes or electrical appliances, and then the problem persists and the leak cannot be located On time.
  • Water calculation – this is one of the signs that we tend to underestimate. Until an inflated water bill arrives that we don’t understand where it came from. Therefore, it is recommended to check the water bill regularly. And if there is a “jump” in costs, you can easily check the water consumption, by closing all the faucets. And thus make sure that the water clock does not move and rule out a plumbing problem.
  • Noises – this is another measure, but an extreme one. When a water pipe bursts you can sometimes hear the flow of water on the walls or floor.

Early detection and prevention

Note: The signs of leakage can be caused by:

  • Domestic plumbing – bathrooms, utility rooms, kitchen, etc.
  • Neighbors’ plumbing leaks – usually in walls near bathrooms and utility rooms. And even neighbors’ balconies (on the ceiling or adjacent walls)
  • Poor sealing of external walls and/or roofs and balconies
  • Central piping – rainwater drainage, sewage piping, central water piping, etc.

There is a variety of equipment for testing and detecting leaks: the initial test will be the water pressure test. which will help to distinguish whether there is a water leak from a pipe. After that, moisture sensors will be placed in the area in question and then using a thermal camera. Accurate detection of the source of the leak.

If there is no pipe leakage, it is advisable to consider a process of  sealing roofs for  leakage from the ceiling or sealing walls  , and if the leakage is from external walls. And wall sealing is also carried out in wet rooms to prevent dampness in the adjacent rooms.
